Recommendation for the Use of dental rotary Instruments
Field: tungsten carbide burs, surgical instruments, steel burs
Fundamentals: Please assure for disinfection, to use appropriate solutions for the different rotary instruments only. Mixing ratio and exposure times indicated
by the maufacturer are to be strictly observed. In Germany, only DGHM – accepted disinfecting agents are tolerated. Damaged instruments (broken cutting
edges, bent working parts, damaged shanks, ect.) are to be sorted out.

Proper Use
• Assure that only technically and hygienically perfect, maintained and cleaned turbines, handpieces and right-angles are used.
• Instruments have to be inserted into the handpiece as deep as possible . Speed up your instrument before contacting the object.
• Please avoid levering movements, excessive pressure and canting of the instrument for the prevention of breakage.
• We recommend safety glasses, if required for the application.
• Bent or not absolute true running instruments as well as instruments with broken or shapeless cutting edges have to be sorted out immediately.
• Please do not touch the Instruments without protective gloves.
• Avoid thermal damage caused by rotary instruments (speed recommendations have to be strictly observed and sufficient cooling must be provided)
• Use instruments with rounded edges preferably, as the preparation of sharp-edged undercuts increases the risk of a damaging notch effect.
Inappropriate use leads to an increased risk and inferior results.
Please observe therefore the indicated instructions for use and speed recommendations.

Water Cooling
• Please provide a sufficient water cooling ( at least 50 ml/ min.) to avoid undesirable heat generation during the preperation.
• FG instruments with total length exceeding 22 mm or a head diameter of more than 2 mm require additional cooling.

Storage, Disinfection, Cleaning and Sterilization
• Rotary instruments must be disinfected, cleaned and – whenever necessary - sterilized prior to first use on the patient and immediately after each use.
Rotary instruments have to be stored in their original packages at room temperature, protected against dust and humidity prior to first use.
• Rotary instrumens have to be stored in hygienic bur stands, dishes or other suitable containers.
The same applies to sterilized and sterile wrapped instruments.
The instruments have to be protected against dust, humidity and recontamination.
• Instruments have to be given in a bur bath with suitable disinfecting agents and cleaning liquids.
Please use anticorrosive disinfecting and cleaning agents for not corrosion-resistant instruments.
• Recommendations for use, immersion time and suitability of disinfecting agents and cleaning liquids
for the different types of instruments are listed in the maufacturer’s instructions.
• Avoid contact with hydrogen peroxide as it attacks and damages the tungsten carbide working parts, which finally reduces the instrument’s working live.
• Sterilization temperatures above 180 °C have to be avoided. Higher temperatures may cause a reduction of the working part’s hardness,
which leads to a reduced working live.
• Rotary instruments made of tungsten carbide and not corrosion-resistant working parts may corrode in the thermodisinfector. That may cause discolouration
and a reduction of the instrument’s working live.

Contact Pressure
Avoid excessive contact pressure (> 2 N) in any case as damages on the cutting edges and an excessive heat generation may be caused.
Excessive contact pressure on grinding instruments may lead to abfraction of the grit, smeared up instruments and an increased heat generation.
Excessive contact pressure also causes thermal damage to the pulp or rough surfaces in case of damaged cutting edges.
Instruments could even break asunder in extreme cases.

Benchmarks for the working Live of rotary Instruments
The actual standing time may differ from the the following values depending on the type of application and the processed materials.
Instruments could be used longer than indicated, if they are not worn.
stainless steel instruments – up to 4 times, tungsten carbide instruments – up to 15 times, diamond instruments – up to 25 times,
ceramic abrasives – up to 10 times.

Elimination of worn Instruments
Damaged and deformed cutting edges cause vibrations and lead to inferior preparation margins and rough surfaces.
Blank patches on the surface of diamond instruments indicate lacking abrasive grit, which reduces the cutting efficiency.
These deficiencies may cause excessive temperatures and finally damage to the pulp. Therefore, eliminate worn and damaged instruments immediately.
Damaged and deformed instruments mislead the dentist to apply a higher contact pressure resulting in an excessive temperature.
Therefore, eliminate damaged and not absolute true running instruments immediately.
